(Doha) The Canadian women’s water polo team has taken another step towards a potential Olympic qualification.
Canada beat New Zealand 14-12 in the round of 16 at the World Aquatics Championships on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals.
The Canadians will then face Spain on Monday for a place in the semi-finals.
To obtain their pass for the Paris Olympic Games, which will be held this summer, the representatives of the maple leaf must finish among the two best teams which have not yet qualified.
Among the eight nations remaining at the Worlds, only Hungary and Italy have not yet qualified for the Paris Games, just like Canada.
Italy faces Greece, while Hungary faces the Netherlands in the quarter-finals on Monday.
The Canadians finished the preliminary phase of the tournament with a 2-1 record, after their only loss came at the hands of Italy. As a result, they finished second in Group D.
