To combat rising water levels linked to global warming, the Maldives have opted for the construction of artificial islands.
There is the turquoise water, the fine sand beach, the luxury hotel… but this Maldives island is totally artificial. It was built by a Danish company. The Maldives archipelago will be submerged by the Indian Ocean by the end of the century, so to maintain tourism, but also to relieve congestion in the capital, new islands are emerging from the water. A floating city will be able to accommodate 13,000 families in 2025.
The possible purchase of land of asylum in India or Sri Lanka
“The height of the island is 1.50 meters. If a storm comes: don’t worry, it stays at the same height. But we are not harming the environment”, says Ibrahim Riyaz, director of Maldive Floating City. For this innovation, the Maldives paid 1 billion euros, which infuriates environmental activists. The authorities respond that they anticipate the disappearance of the archipelago. When the time comes, they could even buy a land of asylum in India Or in Sri Lanka.
