A step forward towards the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution. The deputies voted largely (493 votes for, 30 votes against and 23 abstentions), Tuesday January 30, in favor of the text which “determines the conditions under which the freedom guaranteed to women to have recourse is exercised” to voluntary termination of pregnancy. It must now be examined on February 28 by the Senate, dominated by the right and the center.
The government chose the wording “freedom guaranteed” to find a way of passage between the text which had been voted by the Assembly, evoking a “right”and another that the Senate, dominated by the right and the center, adopted by a few votes, but which only retained the term “freedom”. Balance is essential since both chambers must vote on the same text, down to the comma, before it is submitted to a vote in Congress bringing together parliamentarians, and requiring three-fifths of the votes.
The president of the upper house, Gérard Larcher, member of the Republicans, personally believes that “abortion is not threatened”. Supporters in the Senate of inclusion in the Constitution harbor the hope that votes lost by the right in the senatorial elections will help tip the scales.
