Calls for the Iris awards to be renamed Vallée

The tributes to Jean-Marc Vallée, who left too early on Christmas Eve, continue even more online. On Twitter, a publication by an Internet user proposing that the Iris awards, awarded at the Gala Cinéma Québec, be renamed in honor of the acclaimed director has been widely shared since Monday evening.

The initial tweet was shared nearly a hundred times in less than 24 hours and wrapped up several.

For the general manager of Québec Cinéma, Sylvie Quenneville, “it shows all the affection and all the admiration that people have for Jean-Marc Vallée”. Asked about the possibility of renaming the prestigious prize in honor of the late filmmaker, she replied that the community was still absorbing the shock of the news.

“It is obvious that from January, we will have discussions to pay tribute to this great filmmaker, adds Mr.me Quenneville. I don’t know what form it will take, but there will certainly be one in 2022 from Québec Cinéma ”.

For other Internet users, the news of the death is too fresh. They call for caution to avoid making a decision on the spot of emotion. In this regard, the memory of the Claude Jutra affair is also still very fresh and has been mentioned a few times.

In February 2016, the Québec Cinéma organization decided to no longer use the name “Jutra” for the prizes awarded at its annual gala. The decision was taken after the publication of the story of an alleged victim of sexual assault committed by Quebec director Claude Jutra, in whose honor the Quebec film awards were named.

Mme Quenneville would also like to point out that “the process of nominating an award is very rigorous and requires a great deal of thought”.

For the moment, this is only an idea launched; a tribute in itself. Other award ideas bearing Jean-Marc Vallée’s name are floating in the air. It is now a question of seeing if they will overtake the Web. In the meantime, the discussion is launched.

Jean-Marc Vallée himself won no less than 14 Jutra awards – now called Iris – with his film CRAZY, which has been a huge success in Quebec and internationally. An unmatched record so far. The Quebec director died on December 25, at the age of 58, of a cardiac arrest in his chalet in Berthier-sur-Mer. He leaves the world of cinema in mourning.
