In the Sumy region (Ukraine), a 2km snow-covered path, to which the press does not have access, is the only authorized passage between Russia and Ukraine. A Red Cross rescuer films: his mission is to help Ukrainians fleeing their occupied territories. To reach Ukraine, they must cross part of Russia then take this corridor. They are often elderly people. The two camps respect an informal truce, but danger lurks and mines are hidden under the snow.
Ukrainians fear infiltration by Russian agents
Once in Ukraine, the police check the identity of these arrivals for a long time. Ukrainians fear the infiltration of Russian agents. They are then transferred to a reception center in Sumy. “We couldn’t wait any longer for the liberation. Everything is harsh under the occupation,” says Ludmila, a resident of the Donetsk region. In the accommodation center, the refugees, who left with a few belongings, began a long administrative process.
