In Russia, in several regions, heating pipes break one after the other. As the thermometer drops to -20°C, residents are forced to find solutions to heat themselves: stoves are working at full capacity in homes where temperatures sometimes do not exceed 4°C. The most determined residents are taking to the streets to denounce, using slogans and signs, the lack of investment in heating infrastructure. “This heating season is a nightmare, it’s like a fight for survival”deplores a woman during a rally.

Pipe networks that are too obsolete

In the town of Podolsk, about forty kilometers from Moscow, the breakdowns keep coming and the residents are angry. At the origin of the breakdowns, a lack of maintenance in a boiler room which supplies the city, explain the investigators, forced to find a culprit to avoid the conflagration. On a national scale, the pipe networks, which are too dilapidated, should be modernized to avoid breakdowns. But the cost of the work could amount to 45 billion euros, according to one estimate. A considerable sum when Russia makes defense the priority of its budget.
