96th Academy Awards | Oppenheimer at the top of the selections

(Los Angeles) New success for Oppenheimerhalf disappointment for barbie and brilliance for Anatomy of a fall : the nominations for the Oscars highlighted highly anticipated films on Tuesday, while reserving a few surprises.

Already crowned with five Golden Globes at the beginning of January, Oppenheimerportrait of the father of the atomic bomb directed by Christopher Nolan, has been nominated thirteen times and is the 96 favorite^e edition of the most prestigious Hollywood award ceremony, March 10 in Los Angeles.

As expected, the biopic hits hard in the acting categories, with Cillian Murphy selected in the best actor category for his incarnation of a Robert Oppenheimer consumed by the devastating consequences of his invention, and Robert Downey Jr and Emily Blunt in those of best actor and best actress in a supporting role.

The feature film is followed by Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos, already awarded at the Venice Film Festival and the Golden Globes, and Killers of the Flower Moona historical fresco by Martin Scorsese, which have received 11 and 10 nominations respectively.

THE blockbuster summer barbiethe other half of the “Barbenheimer” duo which dominated a year 2023 marked in Hollywood by the historic strike of actors and screenwriters, has accumulated 8 nominations, less than expected.

This total turns out to be quite disappointing for the film which features the iconic doll and has exceeded 1.4 billion in revenue at the worldwide box office, Greta Gerwig being notably absent in the best director category just like Margot Robbie – who plays Barbie – in that of best actress.

His sidekick Ryan Gosling, remarkable as Ken, and America Ferrera, an overwhelmed mother venturing into “Barbieland”, are however nominated in the categories of best actor and actress in a supporting role.

Sharp success

On the surprise side, the French film Anatomy of a fallPalme d’Or at Cannes, garnered 5 nominations, a success all the more decisive as the film had not been chosen by France to compete for the Oscar for best international film.

Justine Triet’s feature film will be present in the prestigious categories of best film and best director, but also in those of best original screenplay, best editing and best actress, with Sandra Hüller – also starring in a another serious contender, The Zone of Interest (5 nominations).

The German actress told AFP that she screamed in her apartment when she heard the news, scaring her dog.

“Everyone feels incredibly lucky that our work is receiving so much attention,” she said.

Anatomy of a fallwhich traces the trial of a woman accused of having killed her husband, had been snubbed in favor of The passion of Dodin Bouffant to represent France. The choice was controversial and now sounds like a failure given the non-selection of this gastronomic film by the Academy of Oscars.

“It’s absolutely obvious that we didn’t send the right film to the Oscars,” Charles Gillibert, one of the members of the commission responsible for this decision, told AFP before the nominations were announced.

Poor Things in the race

Another notable surprise: the zany one Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos, a fantastic and feminine reinterpretation of the Frankenstein myth, is nominated in three of the most prestigious categories: best actress, best director and best film.

Emma Stone, who plays a young woman brought back to life, is in the race for the Oscar for best actress, alongside Lily Gladstone, the first Native American actress to be nominated in this prestigious category for her brilliant performance in the tragedy Killers of the Flower Moon.

She plays a young Native American woman confronted in the 1920s with a series of assassinations among the Osage people and the greed of white despoilers for the oil discovered on their land. A role for which she has already won the Golden Globe for best actress.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays her husband on screen, was not selected in the best actor category, where the competition was tough.

Other acclaimed films include Maestroa biography of conductor Leonard Bernstein with Bradley Cooper in front of and behind the camera, has 7 nominations, notably in the best actor, actress and film categories.

Notably, three films directed by women are nominated in the best film category, a first: Anatomy of a fall, barbie And Past Lives by Celine Song.

Frenchwoman Justine Triet became the eighth woman to be nominated in the best director category.
