The Minister of the Economy had promised that the increase in electricity prices following the gradual end of the tariff shield would not exceed 10%. Guest of the 8 p.m. newspaper on TF1, Sunday January 21, Bruno Le Maire announced that the bill will increase by 8.6% for normal rates and by 9.8% for off-peak/peak rates, from February 1 . “For 97% of French households, the increase will be below 10%, as I had committed to,” declared the Minister of the Economy, pointing to an increase “difficult, but necessary to guarantee our capacity to invest in new electricity production capacities”, but also “to definitively get away from ‘whatever it takes.’”

Taking the example of a household that does not heat with electricity, the Bercy tenant added that the increase in the bill would amount to “five euros per month, on average”against an increase “on average 18 euros per month”in the case of a family with two children who heat with electricity and live in a detached house.

“We are doing things gradually,” continued Bruno Le Maire, while the next increase in energy prices is planned for 2025. This date will mark the end of the tariff shield, a system put in place in fall 2021 by the government to limit increases in electricity prices.
