Day 4: Racing 92 summary – Cardiff Rugby
… – (France TV)
After three defeats in three matches, Racing 92 won against Cardiff on Saturday on the last day. And thus qualifies for the round of 16.
Proof that three defeats in as many matches do not necessarily destroy the chances of qualifying for the round of 16: Saturday January 20, during the last day of the Champions Cup group stage, Racing 92 largely beat Cardiff (48- 26) and got his ticket to the final phase of the competition.
Until then penultimate in its group ahead of its opponent of the day, Racing did not have its future in its hands. The Sky and Whites needed – for the simplest scenario – a Harlequins victory over Ulster, while also winning their own encounter. First stage validated, with the large defeat of the Irish against the English (47-19). For the rest, Stuart Lancaster’s men took a little time to find the way to the try, 17 minutes exactly, before Kitione Kamikamica went to ruin. A timid start which then did not last: with two additional tries in the first period (Siya Kolisi in the 25th and Tristan Tedder in the 43rd), Racing finished ahead at the break, without being completely safe ( 20-12).
The Racingmen’s defensive errors (four tries conceded) were finally compensated for by a strong attack, with seven tries scored. Enough to take, in addition, an offensive bonus which allows Ciel et Blanc to have eight points in the ranking. Fourth in the group, they are now qualified for the round of 16.
