The three police officers who injured Théo were found guilty and sentenced to sentences ranging from 3 to 12 months suspended on Friday January 19. If the victim’s lawyer welcomes it, the associations denounce the sentences as being too lenient.
The verdict was greeted with anger by associations fighting against police violence. In the Théo case, the three accused were found guilty of intentional violence on Friday January 19. The sentences handed down range from 3 to 12 months in prison, suspended. The main accused is banned from practicing for five years. He is the author of the baton blow which seriously injured Théodore Luhaka.
Associations disappointed with the sentences
“It’s a decision that we take as a victory, because it says, once again, that Théo was a victim that day, that nothing justified that he was beaten”, declared Maître Antoine Vey leaving the court. Maître Thibault de Montrial, lawyer for the main accused, is not of this opinion. “The first impression of our client is the immense relief that for the first time, in the eyes of the whole of France, it has been established (…) that he is not a criminal”, he nevertheless greeted. The associations denounce for their part that only a suspended sentence was issued.
