The Prime Minister is traveling in the Rhône, where he is meeting 150 French people with a view to “feeding” his general policy speech, scheduled for January 30.

The Prime Minister is going to meet rural France to try to defuse the anger of farmers. Traveling in the Rhône, Gabriel Attal responded to a farmer who had questioned him, Saturday January 20, about the future of his profession. While demonstrations of discontent have multiplied in recent days across France, “you must be able to live from your work”, said the Prime Minister.

Speaking in front of some 150 French people, elected officials and citizens selected to exchange with the new head of government in order to “to feed” its next general policy statementGabriel Attal added that it was necessary “ensure that, throughout the chain, with mass distribution, the consumer, etc., there can be a fair share for farmers”.

“Not everyone plays the game” of the Egalim laws

Citing the Egalim 1, 2 and 3 laws passed during Emmanuel Macron’s first term, the head of government recognized “difficulties in applying certain measures”. “I know that when we reopen trade negotiations, we must guarantee that we do not renegotiate the cost of raw materials which is paid to farmers,” he continued. The Egalim laws in fact provide that the prices paid to farmers take into account their production costs, to prevent them from selling at a loss.

“On this subject, we will have to carry out more checks (…) because not everyone plays the game and that is unacceptable,” he concluded.
