Australian Open | Auger-Aliassime eliminated by Medvedev in three rounds

(Melbourne) The journey of Quebecer Felix Auger-Aliassime ended in the third round of the Australian Open tennis tournament.

Auger-Aliassime was defeated in three sets of 6-3, 6-4 and 6-3 by third seed Daniil Medvedev on Saturday in Melbourne.

Medvedev, 27, reached this stage of the competition in the Australian tournament for the fifth time in his career, delivering a serious and diligent performance against the 30e global.

The winner of the 2021 United States Open never trembled against the 23-year-old Quebecer, whom he beat for the seventh time in as many confrontations.

Medvedev won the first round without problem, against Auger-Aliassime, who came down to 30e world place after climbing to 6e rank at the ATP in 2022.

“FAA” then showed its teeth by pocketing its opponent’s service at the start of the second set, before being pulled up and then dropping its throw in to lose 6-4.

The last round was not more complicated for Medvedev, who will face the Portuguese Nuno Borges (69e), surprising winner on Saturday of the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (13e) 6-7 (3/7), 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (8/6).

The Russian will face Nuno Borges in the fourth round, who defeated Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (no. 13) 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2 and 7-6 (6).

There are now no more Canadians on the singles draws at the Australian Open.

All attention is now focused on Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski, who did not have to play her women’s doubles match with Erin Routliffe.

The duo, seeded fourth, took advantage of the retirement of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Veronika Kudermetova to advance to the third round.
