The Toulouse company Kinéis will launch 25 nano-satellites between June 2024 and early 2025. (KINEIS)

With its constellation of nanosatellites (30 kilos each), Kinéis is inspired by the Argos beacon system which works quite simply: you position a sensor on a boat or a polar bear and the information collected is sent regularly to a user, via a satellite link. This is how scientists have been monitoring animal populations for decades, but with a fairly long transmission time.

By reducing this period of time, the new 100% French constellation will enable new uses by placing sensors, for example along rivers. “We have sensors that can calculate an abnormal rise in water, which triggers the alert, and the information is immediately transmitted to the satellite and immediately transmitted to the authorities”summarizes Alexandre Tisserand, CEO of the Toulouse company Kinéis.

Low cost of use

In the same way, sensors can be placed in the forest to measure an increase in CO2 levels, an indicator of the start of a fire. The advantage of the system: low cost of use and sensors that require little energy. “If I take the example of forest fires, the sensor weighs something like a hundred grams, does not exceed a hundred euros to purchase and then it’s a few euros per month of connectivity.”

The 25 nanosatellites will be sent into orbit from June 2024 in clusters of five. The end of the deployment is planned for early 2025.
