Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, incarcerated since 2021 in Tehran, was sentenced to a new prison sentence of 15 months for “propaganda” against the Islamic Republic, her family announced in a press release published on Instagram.
Mme Mohammadi was also sentenced to a two-year ban on staying in Tehran, a two-year ban on leaving the country and a two-year ban on mobile phones – after her release, which is completely unpredictable at this stage -, the family specifies. .
This is the 51-year-old human rights activist’s fifth conviction, three of which relate to her activities in prison, since her last arrest in March 2021. In total, she was sentenced to 12 years and three months of incarceration and 154 lashes, adds the text on Instagram.
Mme Mohammadi refused to appear at her trial on December 19, denying any legitimacy to the revolutionary court that tried her.
“The judgment resembles a political statement against Narges Mohammadi, accusing him of encouraging opinions against the Islamic regime to sow chaos. She is accused of acting on behalf of the enemies of the country,” the family text indicates.
Narges Mohammadi, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight for the promotion of human rights and freedom for all”, has been repeatedly convicted and imprisoned for 25 years for her commitment against the compulsory veil for women and the death penalty.
She is one of the main faces of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising in Iran.
