On Saturday January 13, William Lai, also known as Lai Ching-te, was elected president of Taiwan. The 64-year-old man advocates in particular the autonomy of the archipelago, which must face the Chinese threat.
It is one of the worst adversaries for China. William Lai, also known as Lai Ching-te, is described by Beijing as a grave danger because of his positions in favor of Taiwan’s autonomy. “We are determined to protect Taiwan from China’s continued threats and intimidation”he declared after his victory in the presidential election, Saturday January 13.
Elected for four years
William Lai entered the Taiwanese National Assembly in 1996, the date of the first democratic presidential election, while Beijing was carrying out missile test firings around the archipelago. He then held numerous mandates, before joining the government in 2017. His party advocates in particular autonomy and cooperation with the United States. At the age of 64, William Lai has today achieved recognition by being elected president of the country for four years.
