“We, the Europeans”. Lapland: the call of the Great North

Great report, guests and European news are in the contents of this information magazine, presented by Eléonore Gay and broadcast on Thursday late evening on France 2, as well as on Sunday at 10:40 a.m. on France 3.

When we talk about dream destinations where to celebrate Christmas, Lapland is inevitably mentioned. But it is difficult to locate it geographically: located astride Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish and Russian territories, it can designate a province of Sweden as well as a region of Finland.

Usually, it is this last option that is chosen to designate the place where we can find the legendary house of Santa Claus. An argument that hits home for many winter tourists, ready to do anything to have a magical end-of-year holiday.

Lapland is not “just” Santa’s house

> THE BIG REPORT

The destination is a dream for children, because Santa Claus has taken up residence there, but also for adults, seduced by the scent of adventure in the vast whiteness of the Finnish forest. Tourists come from all over the world, and in ever-increasing numbers: there were 63,000 in December 2022 alone.

Beyond the Arctic Circle, teams of We, the Europeans“(X) went to film the happiness of those who venture into the white desert, accompanied by the silence of their electric snowmobile. But also those who find it difficult to leave the affectionate crew of the sled dogs, or those who discover this cuisine rich in its local products.

A report by Hélène Hug and Eric Maizy.

> THE PLATEAU

Why is Finland named the happiest nation in the world for the sixth year in a row? A particular link with nature is the beginning of an explanation.

To discover what’s next, Eléonore Gay shares special moments with these Finns who love ice baths, warm meals in the countryside at -10 degrees, and return to cozy interiors for the traditional sauna, listed in 2020 as the cultural heritage of the ‘Unesco.
