A cocaine hub, Ecuador has become an extremely dangerous country. President Daniel Noboa was elected on the promise of restoring order.
The assassination in the middle of the electoral campaign, five months ago, of a presidential candidate summary alone the shift of Ecuador into the most extreme violence. The murder was claimed by a drug trafficking gang, one of the two criminal groups that are reigning terror in the country. The two leaders of these gangs have just escaped from prison. Assassinations of civilians, hostage-taking of prison guards, kidnapping of police officers: the country’s young president, Daniel Noboa, elected two months ago, has vowed to restore security. The gangs want him down.
A state of emergency has been declared
Faced with this spiral, the president has just declared a state of emergency. Ecuador, once a haven of peace, has become a drug hub. Produced in Peru and Colombia, it is then sent to the United States and Europe. The country is therefore the biggest victim of the modification of drug trafficking routes.
