It is one of the natural beauties of Anatolia, Türkiye. The lake of Salda, and its turquoise waters that tourists come to admire. But on the edges of the lake, white traces, a sign of its drying up. Salda is not the only Anatolian lake in danger. In this region, out of 13 bodies of water, only three remain. One of them is suffering from a spectacular drought. The lake has shrunk by half and lost 20 meters in depth in less than 50 years. All around, the fields are very green. Corn is water hungry.
8,000 wells declared
Agriculture uses 80% of the pumped resource. 8,000 wells are declared in the region, but there are twice as many. However, groundwater is vital to the survival of lakes which are inexorably emptying. In this region, some have decided to fight to save Turkey’s reservoirs.
