The ministerial reshuffle has been on everyone’s lips since January 5, 2024, and the national tribute to Jacques Delors, chaired by Emmanuel Macron, from Les Invalides, in the presence of all members of the government. Finally, the Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne presented her resignation this Monday, January 8, and we know the name of the one who will succeed her, this Tuesday, January 9, 2024. It is Gabriel Attal, 34 years old, according to VSD, who had been Minister of Education for a little over 5 months.
Gabriel Attal, the youngest prime minister
For the moment, the President of the Republic has not yet made the announcement in the official journal, it is a matter of minutes. On his X account, however, he paid tribute to the one who is leaving Matignon. He wrote to her: “Madam Prime Minister, dear Élisabeth Borne, your work in the service of our Nation has been exemplary every day. You implemented our project with the courage, commitment and determination of women of states. With all my heart, thank you”.
But who is Gabriel Attal, whom he chose to implement the project at the end of his second term? Stéphane Séjourné’s companion also previously held the Public Accounts portfolio for a little over a year. He also served as government spokesperson, as well as spokesperson for La République en Marche. A loyal follower of the president, therefore, and the youngest man to occupy this position, under the Fifth Republic.
Indeed, before Emmanuel Macron, French presidents rarely made the choice of youth in the appointment of their Prime Minister. Aged 46, for his part, an unprecedented age in his position, moreover, the husband of Brigitte Macron thus chose to trust Gabriel Attal. Previously, the youngest Prime Minister in the history of the Fifth Republic was a socialist named Laurent Fabius… In 1984, when François Mitterrand appointed him to Matignon, he was 37 years old. The politician had won his first elected mandate only six years earlier, becoming a deputy for Seine-et-Marne in 1978. He then held several positions in government.
Which studies ?
And this is also the case of Gabriel Attal, who shared the life of the singer Joyce Jonathan, when he was a student at the Alsatian School. Graduated with a master’s degree in public affairs from Sciences Po, as well as a law degree from Assas.
