United States: Las Vegas turns towards more sobriety
United States: Las Vegas turns towards more sobriety – (France 2)
Las Vegas is known as the American city of excess. Located in the middle of the desert, it is now trying to reduce its water consumption.
Las Vegas (United States), city of all excess, with its giant fountains and light shows, has implemented an innovative program to limit its water consumption. At first light, at five in the morning, the water police come into action and tracks down waste. Violations, such as faulty water systems or prolonged watering, are caught on camera. Officers hand out simple warnings or fines. The score doubles with each recurrence.
Convince the population
Raising public awareness while toughening laws has been the policy pursued by Las Vegas for 20 years. Recently, the metropolis banned the construction of gigantic swimming pools for private homes. Within two years, all decorative turf must be removed. These pieces of green consume 65 to 70% of the city. “We’re going to transform this with desert plants“, explains Toby Bickmoreresponsible for the water conservation program. Since 2002, Las Vegas has managed to reduce its water consumption by 26%, even as its population has increased. Even casinos are participating in more sobriety.
