This Sunday, January 7, 2024, the Golden Globes ceremony was held in Los Angeles. If the film Oppenheimer was highly rewarded, the film barbie only left with one statuette. And against all expectations, the French film Anatomy of a Fall, by director Justine Triet, won two prizes, namely the prize of Best Foreign Language Film and that of Best screenplay.
This feature film tells the trial of Sandra, a writer accused of the murder of her husband found dead at the foot of their house. An investigation into a suspicious death is then opened and Sandra finds herself charged despite the doubt: suicide or homicide? During the trial, all aspects of the couple are dissected in front of Daniel, their 11-year-old son…
Moved, Justine Triet did not fail to thank her husband Arthur Harari – who helped her with the writing – during her speech by declaring: “We kept telling ourselves that we had a lot of fun, but no one would go see this movie.” It was under the eyes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Reese Whiterspoon, Jennifer Lopez and even Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner that she received her prize.
As a reminder, the film Anatomy of a Fall won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023. Director Justine Triet, however, found herself at the heart of a controversy by giving a politicized speech. “This year, the country has been crossed by a historic, extremely powerful, unanimous protest against pension reform. This protest has been denied and repressed in a shocking way and this increasingly uninhibited pattern of dominating power is breaking out in several areas” she declared.
