Under the theme of diversity
Banned by NBC after investigation Los Angeles Times revealing that no members of the Black community sat on their jury, the Golden Globes returned to CBS airwaves in 2023 with a promise to encourage diversity. By tripling the number of voters, spread across five continents, the Golden Globes were able to form a more diverse jury with 47% women and 60% people from diverse cultural communities.
Thanks to these changes, more women competed in the Best Screenplay and Best Direction categories. Two actresses featured in foreign language films were in the Best Actress in a Drama category: Sandra Hüller, ofAnatomy of a fallby Justine Triet, and Greta Lee, by Past Lives, by Celine Song. Furthermore, these two feature films were nominated in the Best Drama Film category.
To present the awards, we notably called on Issa Rae, David Oyelowo and Simu Liu. Proud of his Filipino origins, Jo Koy hosted the 81are Golden Globes. Those who expected a tidal wave of pink were treated to many twists and turns.
Movie theater
barbie led the race with nine citations. However, Greta Gerwig’s comedy had to settle for Best Box Office and Best Original Song (What Was I Made Forby Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell). Best film in a language other than English, Anatomy of a fall allowed director Justine Triet to win the prize for Best Screenplay with Arthur Harari.
Killers of the Flower Moonby Martin Scorsese, walked away with the award for Best Actress in a Drama for Lily Gladstone, while The boy and the heronby Hayaho Miyazaki, was crowned Best Animated Feature Film.
TV and platforms
Like barbie, Succession competed in nine categories. The popular HBO series won four awards: Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series (Matthew Macfadyen), Best Actor in a Drama Series (Kieran Culkin), Best Actress in a Drama Series (Sarah Snook) and Best Drama Series.
Respectively crowned Best limited series, anthology series or TV film and Best musical or comedy series, Beef And The Bear stood out two more times each. The first with the Best Actress and Best Actor awards for Ali Wong and Steven Yeun. The second with the Best Actress and Best Actor awards for Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White.
The last season of The Crown won the prize for Best Supporting Actress in a Series thanks to Elizabeth Debicki. For the first time in their history, the Golden Globes awarded the prize for Best Stand-up on TV. It was Ricky Gervais, who was conspicuous by his absence, who had the honor of winning this prize for Armageddon.
