He will leave office a few months before the end of his mandate. The President of the European Council, former Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, is a candidate for the European elections in June and plans to leave his position in July, he announced on Saturday January 6 to several Belgian media, notably at Evening and to La Libre Belgique.

“Four years after starting my mandate as European leader, it is my responsibility both to report on the work undertaken in recent years and to carry out a project for the future of Europe”, said Charles Michel, 48 years old. He will lead the list of the Reform Movement (MR, the French-speaking liberal party) for the elections to the European Parliament. “This therefore means that I exercise my function as President of the European Council until I am sworn in as a Member of the European Parliament, which will take place on July 16”, he clarified. His term, which began in July 2019, was due to end at the end of November.

“After the European elections, at the end of June, beginning of July, it is planned that the European Council will meet and take decisions, in particular to appoint my successor. The European Council will have to decide when my successor will take office”added the former head of government.
