Gender-neutral toy aisles now required in California

Toy stores established in California have been required to have gender-neutral departments since 1er January, under penalty of receiving a fine.

This is what a law introduced in 2021 by the California legislature which officially came into force at the beginning of 2024, CNN reported.

Thus, any toy retailer that has a store in this state and has at least 500 employees must “maintain a gender-neutral section or area whose labeling is left to the discretion of the retailer.”

The bill came about after an eight-year-old girl asked “why should a store tell me what a t-shirt or a girl’s toy is?” MP Evan Low behind the initiative.

“His bill will help children express themselves freely and without prejudice. We must let children be children,” he said according to the American media.

Stores that do not comply with these new rules could receive a fine of $250 for any first offense and $500 for subsequent offenses.
