The events started around 9:45 p.m., about 20 km from Chemin du Lac Mathieu, in the small municipality north of Lac Saint-Jean. A woman in her thirties then swerved on a snowmobile.
According to initial information, it would have lost control of its machine before hitting a gazebo. Two relatives then tried to rescue her by using a sled pulled by a second snowmobile.
“However, they suffered a collision with an original which crossed their path,” explains Catherine Bernard, of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
The victim of the first collision was thrown from the sled. Transported to the hospital, the 33-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries.
The driver of the craft was also propelled away at the time of impact. Like his passenger, he was taken back to hospital to treat serious injuries, but their lives would not be feared.
“A police officer in collision investigation is expected [dimanche] morning to analyze the causes and circumstances of the event, ”said Ms. Bernard.
For the moment, we do not prioritize any hypothesis that could explain the two accidents. The SQ was unable to say whether speed or alcohol was involved.
