No region has been spared. On Friday, December 29, Russia launched a vast series of strikes on several cities across the whole of Ukraine, targeting in particular the capital, Kiev, as well as the towns of Kharkiv (north-east), Lviv (west ) and Odessa (south). A nationwide air alert was activated around 7 a.m. local time, while explosions were heard in kyiv where, according to its mayor, Vitali Klitschko, the “anti-aircraft defense is actively working.”

In Lviv, a city in the west of the country, more rarely targeted, his counterpart Andriy Sadovyi spoke “two strikes” in an attack carried out in total by “ten Shaheds”, Iranian-made drones. The manager mentioned “a fire in a crucial facility”without providing further details.

These attacks come the day after Russian strikes which left three dead and nine injured in two villages in the Zaporizhia region, in southern Ukraine, according to local authorities.

Kharkhiv, Dnipro and Odessa also affected

In the northeast of the country, three people were injured in a strike on the town of Konotop, in the Sumy region, where a residential building was notably hit, according to the local military administration. Three Iranian Shahed drones were destroyed there, according to the army.

Further east, Kharkiv suffered at least ten strikes in two waves which, until further notice, did not cause any casualties, according to the head of the local military administration, Oleg Synegubov. However, a hospital in the Kyivskyi district was damaged, local police said. The city’s mayor, Igor Terekhov, said the strikes were carried out by S-300 and X-22 missiles, and disrupted the electricity supply to transport.

Authorities also reported explosions in the Dnipro region.

In Odessa, in the south, a building was damaged following a strike overnight, but the resulting fire was quickly brought under control, said Mayor Gennady Trukhanov.
