A conflict of rare violence is hitting Sudan. On the sidelines of the bloody struggle between two former allied generals, thousands of men, women and children lack everything in the refugee camps of Chad, the neighboring country.

A helicopter has been chartered by the European Union to take humanitarian workers to the border between Chad and Sudan as quickly as possible. Here, hundreds of thousands of Sudanese have settled in makeshift camps over square kilometers. They returned to take refuge in Chad in order to escape the war affecting their country. On board, Pierre-Yves Scotto coordinates humanitarian aid in the country for the European Union.

The camp is growing every day

Each time, the camp grows. There aren’t enough resources to answer all of this. There are still many people who are completely destitute, who have not received enough assistance. They are extremely traumatized because of the violence that civilians suffer in this conflict.“, he comments. At the border post, a column of carts arrives from Sudan. Several hundred refugees arrive every day, especially women and children.

A family has been walking for two days, with two babies a few weeks old. They lost everything except a few hastily piled up items. “Just yesterday we were caught in an exchange of fire. We were very scared. Many people died. (…) Everyone has suffered and continues to suffer. People are thirsty, they are hungry. It was untenable“, confides a woman. In Sudan, two generals, once allies, are now at war for control of the country. Three million people have left their homes, and 500,000 refugees have arrived in Chad. They lack everything , especially water.
