“We are victims of sanitation in certain sectors of France”, deplores Thursday December 28 on franceinfo Philippe Le Gal, president of the National Shellfish Committee. On Wednesday December 27, the Gironde prefecture announced a ban on fishing, harvesting and marketing oysters from the Arcachon basin and the Banc d’Arguin, after several cases of norovirus contamination.
If Philippe Le Gal recognizes “which must be protected at all costs” consumers, “this remains a difficult time” for the profession. He then incriminates the system “sanitation, which is not well carried out” according to him, just like oyster farmers who denounce, in a press release, the saturation of wastewater networks which contaminate the production areas. The president of the National Shellfish Farming Committee is also concerned about the economy of oyster farming in the Arcachon basin and the Banc d’Arguin. “We ask that (…) colleagues who suffer these damages be compensated”proclaims Philippe Le Gal, especially since, “Unfortunately, there is no insurance in this type of case.”
