This increase had been requested by professionals for several months. The additional premium which finances the natural disaster regime of French insurers (Cat Nat) will be increased from January 1, 2025, from 12% to 20% for homes, according to a decree published Thursday, December 28 in the Official Journal. This general increase aims to revive a system in deficit since 2015. It will also increase the surcharge from 12% to 20% for professional insurance contracts, and from 6% to 9% that on theft and fire contracts. Enough to constitute an additional windfall of 1.2 billion euros per year, according to a press release from Bercy.

For the Ministry of the Economy, this increase is necessary in view of “the frequency and intensity of natural disasters”, like droughts and floods. “However, the contributions collected for this scheme have not been reassessed for almost 25 years. This growing imbalance threatens the sustainability of the coverage of the Cat Nat scheme”justifies the ministry.
