Negotiations were slow to reach a conclusion in New York around a UN Security Council resolution. Adopted after several postponements, Friday December 22, it “required” ultimately humanitarian aid “in large scale” in Gaza. On the military level, Israel reported two soldiers killed in the fighting in the Gaza Strip. Here is what to remember from this new day of conflict and its consequences around the world, two and a half months after the deadly Hamas attack.

A resolution without calling for a ceasefire adopted by the UN

At the end of fierce negotiations lasting several days, the UN Security Council demanded on Friday the delivery “immediate, safe and unhindered” humanitarian aid to Gaza, and this “in large scale”. The resolution, which does not call for an immediate ceasefire that the Americans did not want, calls for “create the conditions for a lasting cessation of hostilities”. It was adopted by 13 votes in favor, none against and two abstentions (United States and Russia).

THE “real problem” for the delivery of aid is “the way Israel is conducting its offensive, which is creating massive obstacles to distribution”, immediately accused the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres. After the Security Council vote which did not call for a ceasefire, he clarified that he would have “hoped” more.

Israel still wants to “examine” assistance to Gaza

“Israel will continue to act in accordance with international law, but will review, for security reasons, any humanitarian assistance to Gaza”, wrote Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen on X (formerly Twitter). For its part, Hamas said in a statement that the resolution was “insufficient” and she didn’t answer “to the catastrophic situation created by the Zionist war machine”.

Three Israeli soldiers and a hostage died

The Israeli army reported on Friday two soldiers killed in fighting in the Gaza Strip, bringing the death toll to 139 soldiers since the start of the ground offensive on October 27 in the Palestinian territory. Kibbutz Nir Oz, along with the army, further announced that a 73-year-old Israeli-American hostage died during his kidnapping on October 7. His remains are still in the Gaza Strip.

On Friday, the Israeli army also announced the death of one of its soldiers on the Israeli-Lebanese border in shots from Lebanon, against a backdrop of almost daily clashes between Lebanese Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas, and Israel .

Hamas says more than 400 people killed in recent days

According to the Hamas Health Ministry, more than 410 people have been killed in the past 48 hours in the Gaza Strip, including 16 on Friday in an Israeli bombardment that hit a house in Jabaliya, in the northern Gaza Strip and five, including four members of the same family, including a little girl, in an attack on a car in Rafah, in the south of this territory.

WHO warns of combined risks of famine and disease

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated Thursday evening that “deadly combination of famine and disease could cause more deaths in Gaza”. “Hunger is spreading across Gaza, and this will lead to more illness, particularly among children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and the elderly.”adds the WHO in a press release.
