The largest vertical farm in Europe has just opened in Taastrup, Denmark. A 7000m2 shed with rows of crops stacked on 14 floors and yet at first glance it looks more like a simple shed in an industrial area of Copenhagen. Inside, the universe is futuristic in which thousands of vegetables grow without soil or sun. “To enter this farm, you have to go through a wind tunnel to eliminate any risk of bacteria or insects inside.“, explains Julien Gasparutto, journalist at France Télévisions.
Anders Rieman, the owner of the premises, is not a farmer but a former banker. It was while working on mathematical models that he had the idea for such a project. “We work on 14 production floors. A traditional farm makes two harvests per year and we make 15 harvests per year. We produce 250 times more than a conventional farm on the same area“says Anders Rieman, CEO of Nordic Harvest.
