The “An idea for France” section of 13 Heures focuses, Thursday, December 21, on the recycling of empty oyster shells. Once crushed, they can be used to make poultry feed, or to create porcelain.

Oysters will be on every table at Christmas. But once tasted, the shells remain. Recycling them has become a habit for Léa, since bins dedicated to their collection appeared. Mathieu Poirier, member of the “Toutenvélo” cooperative, collects empty shells from restaurateurs. Factory “Ovive“recycles 20 tonnes of shells every day. They mainly come from oyster farmers,” says Coline Saulnier, employee at “Ovive“.

These shells are first sorted, then cleaned and dried. They are then ground to make poultry feed. Philip Gaboriaufounder of “Alegina“, uses a white powder made of 100% of oyster shell to make porcelain. On the set of 13 Heures, Thursday December 21, journalist Valérie Heurtel presents other ways to recycle shells. A Breton eyewear maker notably makes frames with shells.
