Strome gives Capitals victory in overtime
Hendrix Lapierre scored a goal and had an assist on Joel Edmundson’s first goal of the season, Dylan Strome scored the game-winning goal in overtime on the power play and the Washington Capitals defeated the New York Islanders 3-2 on Wednesday .
The trio of Lapierre, Aliaksei Protas and Anthony Mantha was the Capitals’ best throughout the game, pinning the Islanders in their territory time and time again and generating two goals. Lapierre, returning to the NHL after a stint in the minors, found himself playing center since Connor McMichael had to withdraw due to illness.
Strome scored his 13e goal of the season, a high for the Capitals, after 1:41 of play in overtime. Darcy Kuemper stopped 30 shots to help the Capitals win for the fourth time in six games.
Strome’s goal was upheld after a video review for high stick.
Alex Ovechkin set up Strome’s goal, but he extended his longest career scoreless streak to 14 games. Despite everything, the team compiled a record of 7-5-2 during this streak.
Ivan Miroshnichenko, the Capitals’ 2022 first-round pick, played in his first career NHL game. He overcame Hodgkin’s lymphoma last season.
Miroshnichenko completed the third line alongside Matthew Phillips and Evgeny Kuznetsov.
Hudson Fasching and Anders Lee scored for the Islanders, who were playing their second game in as many nights. Semyon Varlamov made 33 saves.
The Islanders were without Julien Gauthier, who was injured Tuesday against the Edmonton Oilers. Oliver Wahlstrom replaced him, playing his first match since December 2.

Jets win 5-2 against Wings

Gabe Vilardi had a goal and two assists on Wednesday, helping the Winnipeg Jets win 5-2 against the Detroit Red Wings.
Vilardi scored in a fourth game in a row. He totaled five goals and 10 points during the sequence.
Axel Jonnson-Fjallby and Nikolaj Ehlers each provided a goal and an assist.
Mark Scheifele and Neal Pionk were the other scorers for the Jets, the leaders of the Central section.
Patrick Kane and Olli Maatta fought back for the Red Wings.
Laurent Brossoit made 26 saves in a winning cause, while James Reimer blocked 36 shots.
The Canada Life Center welcomed 12,571 spectators.
The Jets’ four-game homestand will conclude Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Winnipeg set a team record with a 21e consecutive match where the club did not give up more than three goals.
