Four housing projects intended for vulnerable people saw their funding confirmed on Wednesday by Ottawa, Quebec and the City of Montreal.
The three levels of government are investing 80 million to finance 191 housing units or rooms in four different projects.
“Here in Montreal, as well as in other communities across Quebec and the rest of the country, people are struggling to satisfy their most basic need: to have a home,” said Federal Minister Steven Guilbeault, member for Laurier-Sainte-Marie. “The pandemic has reminded us of the importance of having suitable housing. A home is a basic condition for each person to flourish. »
Mr. Guilbeault was flanked by the parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Housing and the mayor of Montreal to make the announcement. This concerned the transformation of a small hotel into a rooming house on Ontario Street East (19 housing units), as well as projects for La Maison du Père for street seniors (54 housing units), and the Women’s Y ( 96 housing units) and Specter de rue for young people in difficulty (22 housing units). These projects should all see the light of day before 2025.
“These four projects will quickly provide social and affordable housing units which are essential to sustainably support the most vulnerable people,” said Valérie Plante. The mayor of Montreal launched a call for the simplification of funding programs for community housing, after hearing the long list of programs from which funding for these projects comes.
The units and rooms will cost the state a little more than $400,000 each, which includes costs for building supervision, if applicable.
