Canada’s population increased by more than 430,000 people between July and October, representing the fastest rate of population growth for a quarter since 1957.
Statistics Canada released its population estimates as of October 1, which show that Canada’s population has exceeded 40.5 million people.
According to the federal agency, the country’s total population growth in the first nine months of the year has already exceeded the total growth of any other full year, including the record set in 2022.
This record population growth has been fueled by international migration, with an increase in the number of non-permanent residents accounting for most of the increase.
The number of non-permanent residents increased by approximately 313,000 during the third quarter of 2023, according to the most recent population estimates.
Statistics Canada indicates that the increase in the number of non-permanent residents is due to work and study permit holders and, to a lesser extent, asylum seekers.
