Employees, residents, elected officials… They took to the streets to express their support for saving the Casino group. In Saint-Étienne (Loire), more than 2,000 people demonstrated on Sunday December 17. Everyone deplores the threats of disappearance weighing on the brand. Established in the Loire prefecture since the end of the 19th century, the large distribution company is the department’s largest employer with 4,000 jobs.
6 billion in debt
“It is an exceptional employment area. Hoteliers, shopkeepers, temporary employment agencies… It’s a whole story that’s been trampled on.” regrets the UNSA union representative, Thomas Meyer. Debted to the tune of 6 billion euros, double according to Bercy, the group is on the verge of bankruptcy. Next week, the unions are expected to meet management and potential buyers.
