Italy: Giorgia Meloni’s government will bring in 452,000 foreign workers by 2025 – (France 2)
The government of Giorgia Meloni has decided to bring 452,000 foreign workers into Italy by 2025. A decision taken while many sectors are in crisis.
Elected on the promise of fighting immigration, Giorgia Meloni and her government announced the return of 452,000 foreign workers to Italy by 2025. The leader of the Italian far right promised, at every meeting, to block immigration. A year after his election, his government nevertheless authorized these legal immigration quotas, the largest in twelve years.
An aging of the Italian population
The sectors concerned are agriculture, catering and fishing in particular. Trades in tension which can no longer find workers due to the aging of the Italian population. For a restaurateur from the city of Siena who voted for Giorgia Meloni, the turnaround in her migration policy makes sense: “There are a lot of foreign workers here, I don’t see any problem welcoming them if they work.”
