Environmentalists want the abolition of the Court of Justice of the Republic, but the timetable is not ideal because their motion to reject the immigration bill complicates relations with the majority.

A priori the rejection of the immigration law, and the abolition of the Court of Justice of the Republic (CJR) have nothing to do with each other, and yet the two subjects are linked by a coincidence of timing. It was the environmentalist deputy Julien Bayou who tabled a bill to abolish the Court of Justice of the Republic on November 30, just after the acquittal of Éric Dupond-Moretti. He would like this proposal to be examined in the National Assembly the week of January 29, dedicated to transpartisan texts. To achieve this, he must find allies among the members of the presidential majority by next Tuesday, the date on which the work program will be decided.
The abolition of the Courts of Justice of the Republic already mentioned in 2018
The problem is that relations are not good between the majority and the environmentalists, whose motion to reject derailed the immigration law on Monday, December 11.
Abolishing the Court of Justice of the Republic is a proposal that could appeal to Macronists since this idea appeared in the constitutional revision carried out in 2018 by Édouard Philippe when he was Prime Minister. This reform never saw the light of day, hit by the Benalla affair. Julien Bayou also took up the proposal at the time almost word for word to attract the favor of the majority. Despite the acquittal of the Minister of Justice, many consider that we must put an end to this “exceptional justice”, where politicians judge politicians, fueling “self-suspicion”.
The environmentalist deputy wrote to all his colleagues in the National Assembly, outside the RN, to promote his initiative. He received communist and socialist support and on Monday afternoon, just before the famous rejection motion, Laurent Marcangeli, the president of the Horizons group in the Assembly, told him “let’s talk about it”. Except that since then there has been the motion to reject, and Laurent Marcangeli is “very focused on immigration”, said a relative. They will try to see each other at the beginning of next week, but these days, the future of the Court of Justice of the Republic takes place well after the attempt to save the immigration law.
