COP28: a historic agreement concluded on fossil fuels
COP28: a historic agreement concluded on fossil fuels – (FRANCEINFO)
The text concluded at COP28 in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Wednesday December 13, calls for a “transition away from fossil fuels”.
Has the end of fossil fuels been signed in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), land of oil? Wednesday December 13, after long hours of negotiations, the president of COP28 was smiling. “We can be proud of our historic success”, said Sultan Al-Jaber. A compromise was found between those who wanted a clear exit from coal, gas and oil and those who opposed it.
Island states regret insufficient efforts
The text calls for a “transition away from fossil fuels” in energy systems. “We have the most ambitious text to date on fossil fuels, which outlines a carbon-free future for energy”, approved François Gemenne, co-author of the 6th IPCC report. For island states, threatened by global warming, these efforts are insufficient. According to certain countries and certain NGOs, this text, without an exit obligation, does not go far enough.
