Andre Braugher, Emmy-winning actor best known for his roles in the series Homicide: Life on The Street And Brooklyn Nine-Ninedied Monday at the age of 61.
Braugher’s publicist, Jennifer Allen, told the Associated Press that the actor died after a short illness.
Born in Chicago, he played the lead role in glory in 1989, alongside Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington, who won an Oscar for this film about an all-black army regiment during the Civil War. Despite this role, he told the Associated Press in 2019 that he had difficulty finding work in a Hollywood where roles for African-American actors were “few and rare.”
He established himself with the role of detective Frank Pembleton, which he played for seven seasons in Homicide: Life on the Streetan NBC crime series based on a book by David Simon, who later created The Wire.
He won his first Emmy for this role. In total, Braugher has been nominated for 11 Emmys.
Years later, he would move on to comedy, playing Captain Ray Holt in the series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, with Andy Samberg, among others. “The series ran for eight seasons, from 2013 to 2021, on Fox and NBC.
He is survived by his wife, actress Ami Brabson, and their three sons.
