Russia claims “significant” progress in the Zaporizhia region

The general staff of the Ukrainian army, for its part, claims to have repelled Russian attacks in this area, but also on a large part of the front line.

The Russian army advanced “in a significative way” in the Zaporizhia region, in the south of Ukraine, said Tuesday, December 12, the governor installed by Moscow, Yevgeny Balitsky. “The situation is continuously tense, but our guys continue not only to hold the defense, but also to gradually advance”he said again, affirming that the Ukrainian forces were suffering “significant losses”.

This is the first advance claimed by Moscow in southern Ukraine since the Ukrainian counter-offensive was stopped due to lack of success. An announcement which comes while Volodymyr Zelensky is in Washington to try to obtain essential additional aid from the United States.

Ukraine claims to have repelled attacks

In its morning report, the Ukrainian army general staff assured, for its part, that it had repelled Russian attacks in this area, without giving further details, but also on a large part of the front. In the area of ​​Avdiïvka, an industrial town in the East targeted by a major Russian offensive since October, Ukrainian units have “repelled 42 enemy attacks”.

Around Bakhmout, a zone of bloody fighting for almost a year and a half, these are “14 enemy attacks that our soldiers repelled”, just like in the Mariinka area, according to the Ukrainian Army General Staff. Further north, the Ukrainian army also said it had defeated four assaults towards Kupiansk and eight others near Lyman. These areas had been occupied by Russia at the start of its invasion, then reconquered by kyiv in September 2022.
