Still unknown to the general public two years ago, Javier Milei was sworn in on Sunday December 10, three weeks after his victory in the presidential election in Argentina. The 53-year-old ultra-liberal promises drastic changes in the country.
Standing in front of the Argentine Parliament, Javier Milei took the oath of office on Sunday December 10. He was officially inaugurated president, and dressed in the sash of his office. In the Assembly, Argentine parliamentarians but also the former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, the King of Spain Felipe VI and the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky. A crowd of Argentinians gathered to listen to their president’s first speech.
Laws in the coming days
After the festivities, the ultra-liberal Javier Milei immediately wants to get to work. He promised laws in the coming days, to get Argentina out of the economic crisis, he said. Among the measures envisaged, a devaluation of the national currency, the peso, the ban on the Argentine Central Bank from issuing currency, and multiple budget cuts. At 53, he claims anti-abortion, climate skeptic and anti-system positions.
