In Europe, several countries are rolling back laws in favor of the environment. The European Green Deal is being undermined and climate targets are being revised downwards.

In the Netherlands, the government voted for the nitrogen plan, which aimed to reduce emissions from animal waste by half. But this plan is on hold and the victory of populist Geert Wilders risks putting a definitive stop to it. When it comes to the environment, the Netherlands is not alone in slowing down. Germany has suspended a construction standard intended to limit thermal strainers.

Several laws shelved

France has postponed the closure of its coal-fired power stations for two years and Italy will build a gas hub on its soil. In Brussels, the green deal is less popular. After the vote on the end of thermal engines and the carbon tax at the borders, leaders are calling for an end to all new regulations. Laws on reductions in pesticides and chemicals, but also on sustainable food and animal welfare, have been shelved. Europe, which had committed to reducing its CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030, should only reduce them by 41%.
