The appeal trial on the excessive spending of the presidential campaign lost by Nicolas Sarkozy in 2012 ended on Thursday, December 7 in Paris. Under deliberation, the decision concerning this new procedure must be rendered on February 14, 2024. In this so-called “Bygmalion affair” trial, the public prosecutor requested a one-year suspended prison sentence against the former head of the State, who was sentenced at first instance to one year’s imprisonment.

The former President of the Republic, aged 68, is being prosecuted for having exceeded the legal ceiling of authorized expenses for the 2012 campaign. This case has been baptized “Bygmalion”, from the name of the company which organized the meetings of campaign of the right-wing candidate.

In total, 14 people, including Nicolas Sarkozy, were sentenced at first instance to sentences of up to three and a half years in prison, part of which was suspended. Three of them did not appeal on November 30, therefore making their conviction final.
