The Ukrainian authorities called on Thursday, December 7, to reduce electricity consumption after a strike on a thermal power station near the front. This is the first call of its kind as winter approaches and the threat of further Russian bombardments.

The Ukrainian Energy Ministry did not give the exact location of the affected site. “The equipment was seriously damaged”he said in a press release, adding that “two electrical units” had been arrested. The ministry therefore called “consumers to support energy workers” using electricity “wisely and economically, especially during peak hours”.

On Facebook, the Prime Minister, Denys Chmygal, clarified that this shortage was linked to “falling temperatures, emergency repairs and limited operation of solar power plants due to cloudy weather”. Last winter, Russia carried out a campaign of targeted bombings on the country’s energy infrastructure, with the aim of forcing the population and the authorities to bend.
