Decorations and traditions

And the first great tradition is that of decoration! In December, preparations are more important than in France, at school, with family, with friends, we like to decorate the house, to make our home warm and magical. The windows are also decorated for the benefit of passers-by outside. In short, decoration in Germany is a moment of sharing and great creation!

From the beginning of December too, there is an important date: that of December 6, Saint Nicolas! Originally, it was on this day that children received their gifts, with a small boot placed at the entrance of the house, in which they would then find their present. Today, according to the families, the gifts arrive rather at Christmas, by Santa Claus or the baby Jesus.

And what do we eat in Germany?

As a main course, you will find different recipes from one region to another. But most of the time, it’s a goose or a turkey that will end up on the table, accompanied by red cabbage cooked with apples and onions as well as knödel. It is not impossible to see the famous kartoffelsalat and its Strasbourg sausages invite themselves to the holiday table!

Finally, for sweets, of course, you will surely eat gingerbread! Maybe even in the form of a house, as in the Hansel and Gretel tale! Otherwise, the traditional cake is Christstollen, a bread stuffed with marzipan, dried and candied fruits, with spices.

Frohe Weihnachten!
