The president of the Republicans Éric Ciotti will defend on Thursday, December 7, an amendment establishing the possibility of security detention, in particular for S files, within the framework of the constitutional law proposal tabled by the Republicans, “relating to the sovereignty of France, nationality, immigration and asylum”, he declared Wednesday at a press conference. The text is included in the National Assembly as part of the LR niche this Thursday.
“I will defend an amendment which establishes security provisions in the Constitution regarding the prevention of terrorism. We will allow through this modification, if it were adopted, to make provisions relating to security detention, or administrative detention, for known individuals, identified by the intelligence services, whose dangerousness is proven, who sometimes come out of prison, and who are identified as being potential human bombs. We saw this again in the attack which occurred this weekend in the near the Eiffel Tower: once again, this individual was perfectly identified, known”announced Eric Ciotti.
A necessary “reform of the Constitution”, according to Eric Ciotti
In the motivations for his amendment, Eric Ciotti cites in particular a “security measure” for S files. “Safe detention, even provisional, of a radicalized French person, is a measure depriving of liberty which could apply not only to people already convicted of terrorism but also to people strongly suspected of being able to carry out the act (the files S)”. The member emphasizes that there are “very high chance that the Constitutional Council will declare it contrary to the Constitution”that’s why he “we have to go through a reform of the Constitution”, according to him. According to Eric Ciotti, “Today we are deprived of the tools that could provide greater protection for our fellow citizens.” According to him, it is necessary to adapt “to an increasingly strong threat which will be extremely important on the eve of and during the Olympics”.
A fairly similar text will also be proposed by the senatorial right. “In a few days, we will propose a text to extend security detention to convictions for terrorism. We must establish very strict surveillance controls for these dangerous individuals”also announced the president of the Les Républicains group in the Senate, Bruno Retailleau, on X (ex-Twitter).
