The sacred fire | The duty

Since November 23, many of us have braved the cold for the sake of the children entrusted to us. We are driven by a desire for social justice. We want to improve the learning conditions of our students, because we are aware that they do not all have the same opportunities. In this three-speed system, we strive, day after day, to change the situation for those who were not lucky enough to be born into the right environment. Merit is not a question of talent, but simply a question of social determinism. We know it well: those who leave private schools are much more likely to undertake university studies.

The bitter cold does not pinch us as much as the contemptuous remarks of our leaders who pride themselves on knowing better than us what will improve the learning conditions of our students. How would they know? They have never seen this glimmer of joy in the eyes of a child who suddenly understands that we are finally looking at him and that we want his best. Our dear Minister of Education puffs up his chest to take pride in his position and proclaim that we should not compare the job from a teacher to that of an MP. He is right ! Our missions differ. He is part of the cogs in a machine that seems to crush others instead of elevating them. Teachers spend their days lighting sparks. Grandeur and honors end up withering the heart. Tenderness and kindness expand our capabilities.

We are not cold, we are convinced that our fight is worth it. We warm ourselves in the sacred fire that animates every teacher! We are here to play a decisive role in the lives of the children entrusted to us. It is we who must feel proud to work for the common good. Our mission is the most beautiful there is, we participate in bringing about a better world.
