Quebec students remain the country’s champions in mathematics, reveals a study published Tuesday by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
The study observed that Quebec students particularly excelled in mathematics and performed at levels comparable to those of some of the best-performing countries and economies, notes the Council of Ministers of Education of Canada.
Indeed, we note in the Canadian report, “compared to the results of Canada as a whole, Quebec students have an average score higher than the Canadian average” in mathematics.
Young people in the province, however, experienced a decline in reading. Between 2018 and 2022, the average score fell by 13 points in Canada as a whole. Quebec experienced one of the “most pronounced declines”.
Internationally and in Canada, “girls have consistently performed better than boys” in reading. “On the other hand, in the field of science, girls and boys showed similar performance,” writes the Council of Ministers of Education.
The Program for Student Assessment (PISA) tests were taken in 2022 by nearly 700,000 young people from 81 countries.
In Canada, more than 23,000 students from more than 850 schools in ten provinces participated. PISA tests assess the skills of 15-year-old students, which for several countries means the end of compulsory schooling.
