The film “Bâtiment 5” by director Ladj Ly is released in cinemas on Wednesday December 6. It chronicles the growing housing crisis in the suburbs.

Director Ladj Ly left his mark on French spectators with Les Misérables. His city of Bosquets in Montfermeil (Seine-Saint-Denis) once again inspired him to make a film: Building 5, which will be released At cinema Wednesday December 6. The apartment he grew up in no longer exists. On this vacant lot, a ten-story tower stood: building 5. Everything was destroyed three years ago, in a vast urban renovation plan. A painful memory for the director.

Similar situations throughout France

In his new film, Ladj Ly tackles the housing crisis, with the duel between a mayor ready for anything and Haby, a rebellious resident of the neighborhood. A political film about the renovation of the suburbs, which is a source of confrontation and sometimes violence. A situation which is not unique to Montfermeil. Director Ladj Ly and the actress Anta Diaw observed similar situations throughout France, such as in Aubervilliers (Seine-Saint-Denis), at the foot of a building also threatened with demolition. With Building 5, the co-owners of these threatened buildings finally feel heard. Elections rather than violence: this is the message of this film.
